On Tuesday, October 15, the Federal Government of Nigeria announced that the UK government did not support the petition submitted by Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, seeking the creation of a Yoruba Nation.
In a statement, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, criticized media reports about the petition as "highly misleading." He explained that the British High Commissioner in Abuja was called in to clarify the matter. During their discussion, the High Commissioner expressed concern that the issue had been exaggerated and reiterated that the media coverage was not accurate.
The High Commissioner acknowledged the receipt of the petition but clarified that it was part of a standard procedure for delivering letters to No. 10 Downing Street. He emphasized that the petition was neither endorsed by the UK government nor the UK Parliamentary Petitions Committee. Furthermore, he stated that the UK government generally does not engage with petitions related to the internal matters of other sovereign nations.
