Governor Seyi Makinde has affirmed that the coronation of Akeem Owoade as the 45th Alaafin of Oyo will proceed as scheduled on April 5, despite ongoing legal disputes.
Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Makinde told The Punch on Thursday that no court ruling prevents the state government from proceeding with the event.
“Is there any ruling stopping the government from going ahead with the coronation? There is none,” Makinde asserted.
This declaration comes even as two contenders for the throne, Lukman Gbadegesin and Ismaila Owoade, have filed lawsuits challenging Makinde’s approval and his presentation of the certificate and staff of office to Owoade on January 13.
Gbadegesin’s lawsuit, filed on February 12, argues that Owoade’s selection violates the Chiefs Law of Oyo State, 2000 and the Registered Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration of 1961. He is seeking to nullify the appointment and prevent Owoade from assuming royal duties.
Similarly, Ismaila Owoade has filed a separate lawsuit against Governor Makinde and 19 others, alleging that the selection process was unfairly halted to favor Prince Abimbola Owoade.
Despite these legal battles, Demola Ojo, head of the coronation planning committee, confirmed that preparations for the ceremony are ongoing. Meanwhile, the Alaafin-designate has continued to receive visitors at his private residence in Oyo town.
