Christian Association of Nigeria Declares June 14 ‘Black Sunday’ in Honour of Victims of Insecurity

The Christian Association of Nigeria has declared Sunday, June 14, 2026, as a nationwide “Black Sunday” to honour Nigerians who have lost their lives to terrorism, kidnappings, and other violent attacks across the country.

The decision was announced following the 2026 National Church Denominational Leadership Summit, where Christian leaders expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in Nigeria.

As part of the initiative, CAN also unveiled a three-day prayer programme scheduled to run from June 12 to June 14. The programme is aimed at seeking divine intervention, peace, and an end to the wave of violence affecting many communities.

Speaking after the summit, CAN President, Daniel Okoh, emphasized that while prayer remains important, it must be accompanied by concrete action from the government.

According to him, prayers alone cannot resolve the country’s security challenges. He urged the Federal Government to take stronger measures, including declaring a state of emergency on insecurity.

Okoh also called for the establishment of state police and the decentralization of Nigeria’s security structure, arguing that such reforms would help security agencies respond more quickly and effectively to threats.

In addition, he demanded the release of kidnapped victims and called for justice for families and communities that have suffered losses due to ongoing attacks and violence.

The declaration comes at a time of growing concern over kidnappings, killings, and terrorist attacks in several parts of Nigeria, with religious leaders urging authorities to intensify efforts to protect lives and property across the country.
