Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson Okojie is facing intense criticism for campaigning for Senator Monday Okpebholo, the APC candidate for the Edo State gubernatorial election. Johnson, whose husband is a politician in Edo State, was seen at a political rally in Ward 6, Irruekpen, Esan West LGA, urging women to talk to their families about voting for the candidate. A video of her rally has since gone viral on X (formerly Twitter), sparking backlash.
Netizens have heavily criticized the actress, accusing her of promoting a candidate for personal financial gain. One user, @Linzkits, said, “She has already cashed out. Don’t be foolish to follow her." Another, @Amfani_Shadrach, expressed anger, writing, “God punish you.” Meanwhile, @Gloree noted, “Her husband is serving under APC. She has no choice, but in her heart, she knows the truth."
The criticism continued, with @Chris announcing a boycott: “Any movie, advert, commercial or endorsement featuring Mercy Johnson, my family won’t patronize." @Godwin_Ibadin called her out for supporting an "illiterate" candidate, while @Edeh compared her actions to the devil’s deception, saying, “That’s how the devil operates, half-truths."
A more nuanced take came from @DistinguishedKPMG, who remarked, “Mercy Johnson is still doing party supremacy in Edo State. Soon she will make a video about the high cost of living, and her fans will clap, as if she wasn’t part of the problem.”
Despite her fame, Johnson’s decision to support Senator Okpebholo has sparked a heated debate, with many expressing disappointment and frustration at her involvement in the political arena.
