The mother of Prophetess Naomi Ogunseyi, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, has made an emotional appeal to Nigerians, seeking support for her daughter. Naomi is currently facing charges related to the tragic death of 35 children during a funfair she sponsored in Ibadan, Oyo State, last week.
On December 24, a Chief Magistrate Court in Iyaganku, Ibadan, ordered the remand of Prophetess Naomi and two others in connection with the stampede. The tragic event occurred at Bashorun Islamic High School during a funfair organized by Naomi, which resulted in the untimely deaths of 35 children.
Reports indicate that the stampede happened around 6:30 a.m., hours before the event was scheduled to begin.
In a video shared on social media, Naomi’s distraught mother pleaded with Nigerians to help secure her daughter’s freedom.
She said:
"Please help me! It was good my daughter went to Ibadan to do. She has been conducting such programs for over ten years now, helping children, the elderly, and pregnant women. I empathize with all who lost their children. Please, people, come to my aid! Do not let them throw Naomi into prison. My child is innocent. She only came to do good."
The grieving mother claimed that Naomi and the other defendants were taken to court “secretly” and are now facing serious charges, including murder.
"My child is not a killer. She was only trying to help," she added, emphasizing her daughter’s long-standing commitment to charitable works.
The video has sparked mixed reactions online. While some sympathize with the mother and call for leniency, others demand accountability for the lives lost. The tragic event continues to draw widespread attention as Nigerians await further developments in the legal case.
