The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has accused the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, of plotting against him — despite his alleged key role in helping the Ooni ascend the throne in 2015.
Speaking during a Ramadan lecture in Iwo, the Oluwo recounted how he intervened in a legal case that could have prevented Oba Ogunwusi’s appointment as Ooni. He revealed that before he became king himself, he used his influence to secure the Ooni’s throne after the then Prince Ogunwusi reached out for help over a court dispute.
“In 2015, I was contacted by Prince Adeyeye Ogunwusi. His major concern was a court case delaying his appointment as Ooni. I made one call, and by Friday, the case was resolved. He became Ooni the next day,” Oluwo said.
However, Oba Akanbi expressed regret that the Ooni, whom he helped, allegedly turned against him. He accused the Ooni of trying to destabilize his territory, using other monarchs to undermine him, and even plotting his suspension from the Osun State Council of Obas.
“He is working hard to remove me as Oluwo, but it will never happen. He has used people against me and even confronted me in front of the governor, attacking me for discouraging idol worship. But I remain unshaken. No one can bring me down,” he stated.
In response, the Ooni of Ife, through his media aide, Chief Moses Olafare, dismissed the accusations. He stated that the palace has no intention of responding to Oluwo’s claims.
“This is not the first time Oluwo has made such comments. Ooni is focused on developmental projects and has no time for distractions. He is not interested in responding to someone looking for attention,” Olafare said.
