As Nollywood stars increasingly set their sights on Hollywood, Mercy Aigbe shared her perspective on the trend in a recent interview with Seun Oloketuyi. Asked if she plans to follow the path of other Nigerian actors seeking to break into the international scene, Aigbe explained her approach, emphasizing that global success doesn’t require relocation.
In her response, she said, “I take it a step at a time. I say, ‘This is what I want to do, this is what I want to conquer.’ And then when I’m done, I move.” She affirmed her desire for international recognition but believes that social media has simplified the path.
“With social media, you can get noticed anywhere. You don’t really have to japa,” she remarked. “Social media is like a small village… Once you constantly put in the work, when the opportunity comes, they will come and look for people here in Africa.”
Aigbe further highlighted the unique talent in Nigeria, saying, “We are blessed with talent, most especially in Naija. I don’t know whether it’s hunger o, but Nigerians are super talented.” She noted that international filmmakers often rely on social media to discover African talent and believes that with visibility and quality work online, the opportunities will find their way to Nigeria.
Aigbe’s stance resonates with fans who agree that staying grounded at home can still lead to international success.
